A Discovery

The mud I have been using in my work came from Bawley Bay in Gravesend. When I looked at the photos I took while there I realised it was the same view of a watercolour that Turner painted.  I had a copy of this on the wall in my studio. The building in the background was, in Turners time, an Inn. The current building is the old Mission House, which appears to have been built on the Inn’s foundations.  There is no other place like this in Gravesend, so he painted this view from the same place that I stood to dig the mud. There is no record of this painting being Bawley Bay in the description at the Tate.
